Quantum Theory

Defining Quantum Theory

Quantum theory describes how everything works at the sub-atomic level of particle physics. Particle physics or high energy physics is a branch of physics that studies the nature of particles and radiation. Whether or not it is the big TOE (Theory of Everything) has yet to be discovered. However many of the theories and experiments done have been astounding. The activities of particles at the sub-atomic level bear no resemblance to what appears to be happening at a macro-level.

To get a brief understanding of the weirdness of the behaviour of elementary particles watch the following video. It shows how elementary particles can be both an energy wave and a particle. The result is that it behaves as both depending upon whether or not its actions are being observed. This is a fascinating video that will open your mind.

Wave/particle duality is only one of the strange observations uncovered by particle physics. Another is quantum entanglement. This occurs when a group of particles interact or share the same space. It appears that all the particles in the group share a commonality and cannot be described as being independent of each other. Even when separated by large distances, the properties measured, such as spin, momentum and position are immediately affected by the separated particle(s). This happens regardless of the distance separating the two. Experiments with quantum entanglement have been done using photons, electrons, neutrinos and molecules as large as buckyballs (a form of carbon-composed clusters of 60 carbon atoms) and even small diamonds.

Quantum Tunneling

This phenomenon is a quantum mechanical oddity. It basically happens when a particle penetrates potential energy that is higher in energy than the particle’s kinetic energy. In other words, a particle passes through a solid. Ernest Rutherford first discovered this when he observed an experiment where particles passed through a gold leaf. Read more here. Here’s a short video that explains it well.

The Schrödinger Equation and Quantum Mechanics

This equation predicts the wave function of a dynamic system. A dynamic system is one where there is motion involved. This equation predicts analytically and precisely the probability of events or outcome. I find videos a better way of explaining than any amount of words. So, here is another explanation.

Quantum Consciousness and Metaphysics

The term quantum consciousness maintains the assumption that quantum mechanical phenomena such as superposition and quantum entanglement may well have a role in the functioning of the brain/mind. The wave/particle duality experiment proves that the mere observation of energy particles i.e. electrons, behave like particles only when observed. This can be seen in the video at the top of this page. These peculiar abnormalities ultimately reveal that what you see is somewhat of an illusion. That is not surprising given that in Seth Speaks by Jane Roberts, Seth quotes:

“You cannot trust your physical senses to give you a true picture of reality. They are lovely liars, with such a fantastic tale to tell that you believe it without question. You are sometimes wiser, more creative, and far more knowledgeable when you are dreaming than when you are awake.”
—SS Chapter 1: Session 511, January 21, 1970

But does this mean that because our physical senses don’t provide the real and true depiction of reality that it isn’t real? Is it real or is it an illusion? For that matter what does ‘real’ even mean? Again Seth states:

“It is not that physical reality is false. It is that the physical picture is simply one of an infinite number of ways of perceiving the various guises through which consciousness expresses itself. The physical senses force you to translate experience into physical perceptions.”
—SS Chapter 2: Session 515, February 11, 1970

And what does quantum theory say about physical reality? Quantum mechanics suggests that we perceive at most a tiny sliver of reality because the visible spectrum is only a small part of the entire spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. Quantum mechanics would indicate that the physical reality that we seemingly perceive is radically different from the underlying foundation that underpins our experience of the physical universe. Again from Seth:

“Individually, you move in a very limited area of this vast universe, and yet inner reality is more (long pause) massive in size if you speak in terms of size. It is far more extensive even in physical terms, and its reality exists in dimensions that do not exist within the physical system. You take for granted the existence of this largely unknown physical world.”

Summary

This article in no way intends to be a technical or comprehensive account on quantum theory. Rather the intent is to show the connection between the oddities of quantum theory and the esoteric teachings channelled from non-physical entities. It would be an individual’s decision to determine what to believe. And remember, beliefs can be changed.
